Handmade Jewellery in Canberra: How a Piece Is Made in Our Woden Workshop, Step by Step
Most people only see a finished ring in a glass cabinet, never the hours of work behind it. At Vangeli Jewellery , that work happens a few metres from our showroom counter. Our family has been making handmade jewellery in Canberra since 1978, and in 2026 every piece still begins at the jeweller's bench in our Woden workshop, not in an overseas factory.
This guide takes you behind the counter. You will see each stage of how a piece is made, why handmade differs from hand-finished, and what to ask when comparing jewellers in Canberra.
Quick answer: Handmade jewellery is made by a jeweller at the bench from raw precious metal and loose gemstones, rather than mass-produced from moulds. In Canberra, a handmade piece usually moves through six stages: design, gemstone selection, metal preparation, forming and assembly, stone setting, and polishing. When the jeweller has an onsite workshop, every stage happens under one roof.
What Is the Difference Between Handmade and Hand-Finished Jewellery?
Handmade jewellery is formed by hand from start to finish. Hand-finished jewellery is usually cast or machine-made elsewhere, then polished or set by hand. Both are often described as "handcrafted", so the label alone tells you very little.
The difference shows up in daily wear. When metal is rolled, hammered and drawn by hand, it becomes compressed and harder, which helps claws grip stones and bands keep their shape. And because the maker knows exactly how the piece was built, future repairs and resizing are simpler.
How a Piece Is Made in Our Woden Workshop, Step by Step
Every piece of bespoke jewellery we make in Canberra follows the same eight stages.
Step 1: The Consultation and Design Brief
It starts with a conversation. We ask about your style, budget, lifestyle and any deadline. You can bring inspiration photos, a rough sketch, or old jewellery you would like to reuse. Our custom jewellery design service custom jewellery design service turns that brief into a clear plan.
Step 2: Selecting the Gemstones
We choose the stones before any metal is touched, so the setting can be built around each one. Catherine, our diamond grader, checks every diamond for colour, clarity and cut (our guide to the 4 Cs of diamonds explains why these matter). We also offer black opals from our family's Lightning Ridge mines, South Sea pearls from Broome, and champagne and cognac diamonds.
Step 3: Drawing and Approving the Design
Next, the design is drawn to scale. We check its proportions against your finger size and the exact measurements of your stones. Nothing goes to the bench until you are happy with the design.
Step 4: Preparing the Metal
We work mainly in 18ct gold and platinum. The metal is weighed, melted and poured into a small ingot. That ingot is then rolled into sheet or drawn into wire, ready to be shaped. Compare both metals in our white gold vs platinum guide.
Step 5: Forming and Assembling the Piece
The jeweller shapes the band around a ring mandrel, then builds the head and gallery that will hold the stones. Each part is joined with precision soldering and checked for fit.
Step 6: Setting the Stones
Our diamond setters work under magnification. They cut a seat for each stone and fold the metal over it, whether as claws, a bezel or fine grain settings. Every stone is checked to make sure it is held securely.
Step 7: Polishing and the Final Quality Check
The piece is polished in several stages, from coarse to mirror finish. Any engraving is added now. A final inspection under a loupe checks claw height, symmetry, comfort and the metal stamp.
Step 8: Collection and Lifetime Care
When you collect your piece, we check the fit on your hand. Our lifetime maintenance service covers cleaning and claw checks to keep the piece secure for decades.
Custom and Bespoke Engagement Rings Made in Canberra

Engagement rings are our most requested pieces. Couples usually choose one of two approaches:
-
Custom engagement rings start from an existing style, then change details such as the stone, metal or band width.
-
Bespoke engagement rings are designed entirely from scratch around your story, so no other ring is quite the same.
Both follow the eight steps above. Many couples also have a matching wedding band made at the same time, so the two rings sit perfectly together. To see the customer side of the journey, read how the custom jewellery design process works, or browse examples of our handmade work.
What to Look for When Choosing Jewellers in Canberra
Not every jeweller in Canberra makes pieces locally. Before you commission one, ask these five questions:
-
Is there an onsite workshop? Ask whether your piece will be made on the premises or sent away.
-
Who will make it? Experienced makers will happily tell you their name and training.
-
What metal purity is used? Look for clear answers, such as 18ct gold or 950 platinum.
-
What aftercare is included? Regular cleaning and claw checks protect your investment.
-
What do past clients say? Read genuine client testimonials and look at photos of finished work.

Frequently Asked Questions About Handmade Jewellery in Canberra
How long does handmade jewellery take to make?
It depends on the design and the stones. A simple band is quicker than a detailed engagement ring, and rare gemstones can take longer to source. We give you a clear timeframe at your first consultation.
Is handmade jewellery more expensive than mass-produced jewellery?
Not always. When you buy directly from the maker, there are fewer middle layers adding cost.
Can you turn my old jewellery into a new handmade piece?
Yes. Our jewellery remaking service can reuse your gold and stones in a new design, such as turning an inherited ring into a pendant.
Where is Vangeli's workshop?
Our showroom and workshop are at Shop 2, Bowes Place, Woden Town Square, ACT 2606. We are open Tuesday to Friday, 10:15am to 4pm, and Saturday, 10:15am to 2pm.
